Critical and Useful Public Health Alerts Available The Essex Regional Health Commission LINCS (Local Information Network and Communications System) Agency is seeking to sign up public health partners such as physicians, hospitals, schools, and government agencies, for the Health Alert Network (HAN). The purpose of the HAN is to ensure that each community has rapid and timely access to emergent health information which can effectively assist the nation’s frontline defense against terrorism and other public health threats. To accomplish this, The HAN Messaging System directly and indirectly transmits Health Alerts, Advisories and Updates to various public health stake holders including those mentioned above. Most messages are sent via email, but faxing capability and some voice messaging is available as a back up or supplement. The HAN is administered by the LINCS program, which is a statewide system that supports public health planning, coordination, surveillance and communications throughout the 21 counties in New Jersey. In 1997 the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services (NJDHSS), in cooperation with New Jersey’s local health departments, established LINCS. This was funded with a grant from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Twenty-two agencies strategically located throughout the State, known as LINCS Agencies, serve as regional partners with NJDHSS. In turn, those regional agencies have established local partnerships with stake holders in their respective regions. In Essex County the sponsoring agency for the LINCS program is the Essex Regional Health Commission.
